Stereo Width Mistakes That Ruin Your Low End

A mix that sounds huge in headphones and collapses into nothing on a club system almost always has the same root cause: wide low end. It feels impressive on earbuds because your brain reads phase difference between channels as size. On a real sound system, that same phase difference causes cancellation, and your kick and bass lose energy exactly where you need them most.

Why wide bass disappears on big speakers

Stereo width comes from differences between what the left and right channel are doing. At low frequencies, those long wavelengths mean a small phase offset between channels causes real cancellation once the signal is summed to mono, which is exactly what happens acoustically in a room, at distance from a PA, or on any system where bass frequencies aren't perfectly stereo-imaged to begin with. Headphones sit right against each ear, so you hear the full stereo signal with zero summing. A room doesn't work that way.

The mono-compatibility problem

Club systems, Bluetooth speakers, laptop speakers, and a lot of streaming platform previews sum to mono or near-mono at some point in the signal chain. If your kick and bass rely on stereo width to feel powerful, that power is the first thing to vanish. This is why a mix that sounds thin in a club but huge in the studio is rarely a compression or EQ problem, it's a stereo imaging problem in the low end specifically.

Common mistakes

Running a stereo widener across the full mix bus instead of only the mid-high frequencies.

Using stereo detuned or unison synths for a bassline without checking mono compatibility afterward.

Placing a sub or bass sample that was recorded or processed in true stereo, rather than mono with mid-side EQ applied above the low end.

Trusting how a mix feels in headphones as a substitute for checking it in mono.

How to fix it

Keep everything below roughly 100-150Hz mono, kick, sub, and bass fundamentals included. You can still widen the harmonic content that sits above that range, which is what actually reads as "width" perceptually anyway; low frequencies contribute far less to perceived stereo image than mid and high frequencies do. A mid-side EQ or a dedicated bass mono maker on your low end gives you this control without flattening the rest of the mix.

Then check it: fold your mix down to mono and listen for level drop or thinning in the low end. If the kick and bass lose noticeable energy in mono, something below the crossover point is still stereo.
