Gain Staging: The Boring Fundamental Most Bad Mixes Are Missing

Gain staging doesn't get talked about much because it's not exciting, there's no plugin to buy, no trick to learn. But a huge number of "my mix sounds muddy" or "my plugins don't sound right" problems trace back to levels being wrong before any actual mixing decision was made.

What gain staging actually means

Gain staging is setting appropriate signal levels at every point in your signal chain, from the original recording or sample, through each plugin, to the channel fader, to the master bus. The goal is keeping levels in a healthy range throughout, not too quiet where you lose resolution, not too hot where you're clipping or driving plugins into unintended saturation.

Why plugins behave differently depending on input level

Many plugins, especially anything modeling analogue gear (compressors, saturators, tape emulations), are level-dependent by design. Feed a compressor a signal 10dB hotter than it expects and you'll get dramatically more gain reduction and a completely different character than the settings alone suggest. This is why a compressor preset that sounds great on one track can sound wrong on another, the input level hitting the plugin is different, even if the plugin settings are identical.

Common gain staging mistakes

Recording or sampling too hot, leaving no headroom before you've even opened a plugin.

Stacking multiple gain-boosting plugins in a chain without checking cumulative level, so the signal hitting your fifth plugin is far hotter than intended.

Setting fader levels first and using them to control loudness, rather than gain-staging at the source and using faders only for final balance.

Pushing the master bus into a limiter early to 'hear it loud,' which masks genuine level and balance problems in the mix underneath.

A practical approach

Aim for each track to peak somewhere around -18 to -12dBFS before any processing, giving you headroom to work with and landing most tracks in the range analogue-modeled plugins were typically designed around. Check gain staging at each major point in the chain, post-recording, post-EQ, post-compression, rather than only checking the final output level. And keep your master bus out of the red until the mix itself is balanced; a limiter on the master bus during mixing should be there to catch occasional peaks, not to make an unfinished mix sound impressive.
