Frequency Masking: Why Your Mix Sounds Muddy Even When Every Track Sounds Good Solo

You solo the kick and it sounds great. Solo the bass and it sounds great. Solo the lead and it sounds great. Play them together and the mix turns to mud. This is frequency masking, and it's one of the most common reasons a mix full of individually well-recorded and well-processed sounds still doesn't translate as a whole.
What masking actually is
Human hearing struggles to distinguish two sounds occupying the same frequency range at similar levels at the same time. The louder or more prominent one effectively hides the other, even if both are technically audible in a spectrum analyzer. This isn't a flaw in your mix engineering skill, it's a property of how hearing works, and every mix engineer has to actively manage it rather than avoid it entirely.
Where it shows up most often
Kick and bass fighting in the 60-120Hz range, where both often carry their fundamental weight, causing one or both to lose punch.
Vocals and lead synths or guitars competing in the 1-4kHz range, which is where human hearing is most sensitive, this is why a vocal can get buried even when it's not quiet in the mix.
Snare and vocal sibilance overlapping in the 5-8kHz region, making both feel harsh or thin depending on which one dominates.
Pads and other harmonic-rich elements smearing across a wide range and masking transient detail in drums sitting in the same space.
How to actually fix it
Cutting rather than boosting is usually the answer. Instead of boosting a vocal to cut through, try cutting competing frequencies out of whatever is masking it, carving space in a synth or guitar around the vocal's primary frequency range often does more than boosting the vocal itself ever will. Complementary EQ, where you cut in one element roughly where you boost in another, is the classic technique here, and it works because it creates room rather than just adding more signal into an already crowded range.
Sidechain compression is another tool worth using beyond the obvious kick-ducking-bass pattern, a light, fast sidechain between any two competing elements can carve temporal space even when frequency EQ alone isn't enough.
Mix in context, not in solo
The core habit shift is simple: stop making EQ decisions while soloed. A sound that sounds thin or dull in isolation is often correct once it's sitting properly in the full mix, and a sound that sounds full and rich in solo can be exactly what's masking something else. Solo is for identifying problems like noise or artifacts, not for making tonal decisions.
