How Loud Should a Drum & Bass Master Be in 2026?

DnB has always leaned loud, dense low end, fast transients, and a genre culture built around club systems means producers have historically mastered hotter than most other electronic genres. But streaming loudness normalization changes the incentive. Slamming your master louder than everyone else no longer makes it sound louder on Spotify or Apple Music. It just costs you dynamic range for nothing.
Why the old "louder is more competitive" logic doesn't hold up
Before loudness normalization was standard, a hotter master genuinely played back louder next to other tracks in a playlist, which is why the loudness war happened in the first place. Every major platform now turns tracks down to a fixed integrated LUFS target on playback, so two tracks mastered at -6 LUFS and -11 LUFS will play back at roughly the same perceived loudness on Spotify. The only difference is the -6 LUFS version has less headroom and less dynamic punch left once it's turned down.
Two different masters for two different contexts
DnB specifically has a real split between streaming and club contexts, more than most genres. A club system has vastly more headroom and dynamic range than a phone or laptop speaker, and DJs are used to gain-staging on the fly. Mastering one file to try to serve both ends up compromising both.
Streaming master: target roughly -8 to -10 integrated LUFS for DnB, with true peak at or below -1 dBTP. This keeps transient punch (kick and snare impact) intact after platform normalization, rather than getting squashed by an over-limited master that's already flat before normalization even happens.
Club / promo master: can sit hotter, often -6 to -7 LUFS with more sustained energy, since it's played through a system with more headroom and isn't subject to streaming normalization at all.
What actually makes a DnB master feel powerful
Perceived power in DnB comes far more from low-end arrangement and transient clarity than from raw loudness. A kick and bass that are properly separated in frequency and timing will feel heavier at -9 LUFS than a smeared, over-limited low end will feel at -6 LUFS. Chasing loudness as a substitute for arrangement is the most common reason a DnB master feels loud but not actually powerful, the transients get flattened by the limiter doing the work that arrangement should be doing.
A practical target for 2026 releases
If you're releasing primarily through streaming platforms, master to around -9 integrated LUFS with true peak at -1 dBTP, and stop pushing the limiter past the point where transients start losing definition. If you also need a club edit, treat it as a genuinely separate master rather than a slightly hotter bounce of the same file, the two contexts have different headroom and different jobs to do.
